Pedal power to be unleashed on Jozi streets

The City of Johannesburg is proud to host the 21st edition of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge on Sunday, 19 November 2017.

 

The City’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, will fire the starter’s pistol at Riversands Commercial Park, Mnandi Road, at 5:30am to unleash more than 30 000 cyclists onto the streets of Jozi under the watchful eye of the Joburg Metro Police Department, the Joburg Roads Agency and Emergency Management Services.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba says the City of Joburg has pulled out all stops to ensure the safety of thousands of cyclists.

“This is premier sporting event that has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past two decades. That’s why we have deployed highly competent City officials to ensure that road closures are maintained throughout the 105km cycling competition,” says MMC Sifumba.

The event is also used by the City to market Johannesburg to South Africans and international tourists.

“We’re not only the financial capital of the country, but we also boast beautiful tourist gems that need to be showcased to the rest of the world. That’s why as the City, we have positioned Joburg as a tourism mecca, a lifestyle destination and a sporting haven,” says Cllr Sifumba.

As at 2015, over R50 million has been raised for charity. Joburg resident Samantha Peck will be riding for purpose this Sunday as she raises money and awareness for Thembalani Care Centre in Lombardy East, which looks after senior citizens who are deaf and blind.
