Pikitup to keep city clean during festive season

10 December 2015

Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, will be working flat out during the festive season to keep the streets litter-free.

The entity’s waste management services – which include household refuse collection, recyclables, garden sites, bulk, dailies and landfill sites – will be fully operational during the festive season, including public holidays (Day of Reconciliation December 16, and New Year’s Day January 1).

The only shutdown will be on Christmas Day, December 25. Pikitup’s Managing Director, Amanda Nair, urged residents to “reduce, re-use and recycle” waste during the festive season.

“The city generates about 6 000 tons of waste daily. Holidays usually increase the daily waste quantities,” said Nair.

She said as a result of illegal dumping during the festive season, waste bins were overloaded and open spaces degraded, which could lead to health hazards from rat and fly infestation. Residents whose waste collection falls on Christmas Day have been requested to keep their bins in until the following Friday January 1.
