Pikitup’s Midrand depot finds a new home

The Midrand depot of Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management company, has moved to a new and bigger home.
The 51 000sqm depot in Corporate Park – which houses offices, storerooms and a training facility – was officially opened by Pikitup’s Managing Director, Amanda Nair, on Monday.
It is the first depot to be set in a warehouse. It serves, among others, satellite depots in Ivory Park and Diepsloot.
“This depot has a good aura and charisma. You get a sense that people who work here really care about what they do. The commitment of staff and management to make this facility work is pleasing,” Nair said.
She said a similar facility would be opened in Norwood soon.
Patrick Galloway, the Head of Pikitup’s North Cluster, which covers a 57km radius area, including Randburg, Midrand and Marlboro depots, said everyone was excited about the new depot.
“We are setting a new trend here. This is the first depot set in a warehouse. We have everyone in one place,” he said.
Galloway added that at the end of the three-year lease, Pikitup would have built its own depot as land had already been identified for that purpose.
Pikitup trucks collect 1 000 tons of waste in the Midrand area every month.
“We ensure that streets are kept clean and all domestic waste is collected," said Galloway.
He said the separation at source project in the area was going very well, particularly in Diepsloot, where "it has taken off in a big way".
"The project is run by a cooperative, which is doing a great job. The plan is to roll it out to all residential areas by the end of May," Galloway said.
“Our biggest challenge, though, is illegal dumping [by construction workers].”
He said Pikitup was considering imposing a stiffer fine to discourage the scourge.
He said the new builders’ rubble crusher in Linbro Park, near Alexandra, would deal with 75% of illegally dumped rubble.
Pikitup's Regional Director, Nompumelelo Mthethwa, thanked Nair, Galloway and the rest of the management team for their support. She said they had all showed her “the true meaning of teamwork”.
