Pinocchio set to light up the Joburg Theatre

Pinocchio opens at the Joburg Theatre on Sunday, 12 November 2017, and continues its 72-performance season until 30 December 2017.

Honeyman first adapted the story of Pinocchio into a pantomime in 2009. The annual festive season show at Joburg Theatre that year proved to be the most successful panto in the history of Janice's 30-year Joburg tradition.

Starring Tobie Cronjé and André Schwartz, the show opens on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre. Tobie is South Africa's best-known comedy actor. He has for nearly five decades been entertaining audiences with his performances in theatre and operettas, film and television and even as a director of various dramas.

Tobie's name has become almost synonymous with pantomime in South Africa, playing the lead in dozens of these festive season productions throughout much of his career. Tobie received great acclaim for originating the role of the woodcarver Geppetto in the premier production of Janice Honeyman's Pinocchio in 2009.

André is one of this country's leading and best-loved entertainers. A multi-faceted and talented performer who is equally at ease in front of a camera, in a recording studio or on stage, André has entertained South African audiences since the age of 14. André has released 15 albums, many of which received gold status. His leading roles in musical theatre include Abanazar in Janice Honeyman's pantomime Aladdin (2006), Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music and the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera.

Pinocchio is a fictional character and the protagonist of the 1883 children's novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. Carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a village near Florence, Pinocchio was created as a wooden puppet but dreamed of becoming a real boy. He lies often and is known for having a short nose that becomes longer when he is under stress, especially while lying.
