Popular Soweto Wine Festival finds new home
01 September 2015
Apostles of Bacchus, the goddess of wine, will in their splendour grace the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, the new venue for the increasingly popular Soweto wine-tasting festival.
Not only has the annual showpiece found a new home, it has also become even bigger, better and brighter, with food, fashion and style added to its splendid offering, hence its new name – Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival. Indications are that the festival will eclipse other social gatherings and become Soweto’s premier event of the year, what with the fusion of wine, high fashion, good food, tourism and a little bit of history in the mix.
With the organisers having insisted on sourcing wines from the most sought-after boutique wine estates in the Western Cape, the festival – to be held from Thursday September 3 to Saturday September 5 – is expected to attract not only locals, but also a multitude of tourists eager to sample what South Africa’s famous township has to offer in terms of fashion and food.
Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom is expected to grace the festival, which coincides with Tourism and Heritage Month.
An added attraction to this year’s edition is that visitors will also be able to sample new soft drinks, coffees, selected good food and baked goods. Trendy food trucks will also be on display, giving local food vendors a new alternative of selling their wares.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development Councillor Ruby Mathang says the city is proud to be associated with the festival, “which continues to position Joburg as one of the world's leading tourist cities”.
