Region A cleans Jukskei River for Mandela

20 July 2015

It was a day of cleaning and giving in Region A as CRUM staff members gave the Jukskei River in Lonehill a clean-up in the spirit of Mandela Day.

The Region A CRUM staff joined hands in true Madiba style with various organisations, Municipal Entities and other government departments for a clean up of the Jukskei river in Lonehill on Mandela Day.

Abigail Ndlovu, Regional Director of Region A, explained that it is only through working together that we can make sure our environment remains clean and suitable for future generations.

Initiated by the Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco), the event saw more than 50 volunteers who all got their hands dirty for the love of the environment. Kristin Kallesen, chairperson of Gekco, added that Mandela Day was the perfect opportunity for the community and various organisations to contribute their time and labour. Annette Deppe, Ward 93 councillor also took part in the event and thanked the regional staff for their dedication.

Vusithemba Mthethwa, Pikitup Operational Supervisor, explained that staff members from Pikitup were happy to join in and would continue to lend their hands and time to each and every cleaning campaign. The clean-up was also joined by fifteen prisoners of Leeuwkop Prison, who were excited to lend 67 minutes of their time. The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, Kwagga Holdings and City Parks also got involved in the clean-up.
