Region A opens up opportunities for SMMEs
27 October 2015
The Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) workshops held recently in the City of Johannesburg’s Region A will help to expand its supplier database and contribute to economic development in previously disadvantaged communities, according to Regional Director Abigail Ndlovu.
For two days last week, scores of representatives of township businesses and co-operatives from areas such as Diepsloot, Ivory Park and Midrand attended workshops organised by the region to bring them up to speed with its supply chain management policy. Also in attendance were representatives of the corporate sector.
According to Ndlovu, the main purpose of the workshops, which she said were highly successful, was to facilitate procurement opportunities for SMMEs and enhance the corporate members’ preferential procurement efforts. She said the workshops were an important vehicle for the development of SMMEs.
Ndlovu said the workshops provided guidance on the City’s procurement policies and procedures and assisted corporate members to increase their broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) procurement spend. Ndlovu said emerging suppliers had benefited immensely from the workshops.
Some of the topics covered included quotation procedures, tender processes and tender advertisement periods, evaluations, validity periods and awards. The workshops also presented a great opportunity for SMMEs to interact with other service providers.
“The achievement of this noble goal requires a paradigm shift in supply chain management policies and procedures of the City to create an enabling environment for SMMEs,” Ndlovu said.
“Economic empowerment is vital to the future of the region. To this end, the region established the Midrand Business Forum in July. We are dedicated to the improvement in the quality of life of our communities.
“These workshops have identified SMMEs in the region and the City has identified job creation and access to procurement opportunities by SMMEs as an essential ingredient in the building of an economically viable city.”
