Renewed call to protect City’s road infrastructure

13 October 2016

The need to take collective ownership of transport-related infrastructure and the impact of vandalism of transport assets will feature prominently when the City of Johannesburg embarks on a Transport Month roadshow today October 13.

Officials of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), the City’s roads and storm water infrastructure provision and maintenance entity, will visit at least 10 shopping malls throughout the city over five days to raise residents’ awareness of the critical need to protect transport-related infrastructure.

The malls to be visited include Orange Farm Mall and Trade Route Mall in Region G (today October 13), Cresta Shopping Centre and Clearwater Mall in regions B and C (Monday October 17), Pan Africa Mall and Newtown Mall in regions E and F (Tuesday October 18), Diepsloot Mall and Mall of Africa in Region A (Wednesday October 19) and Jabulani Shopping Mall and Protea South Mall in Region D (Thursday October 20).

“Each year, marketing initiatives are put in place to promote the service delivery agenda of the City of Johannesburg by bringing services to residents,” says JRA’s Bertha Peter-Scheepers.

“Mall activations are an ideal platform to engage residents and provide members of communities with the opportunity to experience these services.”

During the roadshow, JRA will focus on its upgraded award-winning Find & Fix mobile app and the newly established Infrastructure Protection Unit.

Peter-Scheepers said JRA staff would be on hand to assist residents with navigating the free Find & Fix mobile app, logging service defects and promoting a culture of community responsibility and ownership.

“The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) will also work with us during this campaign to create awareness of the dangers associated with persistent vandalism and theft of City property.

“Our JMPD and SAPS partners will give advice on the steps to be followed when reporting a case of theft or vandalism of City assets,” she said.
