After a brief hiatus to make way for the festive season, the City of Johannesburg is back to its usual hustling and bustling self.
Perfect weather, summer sidewalk sales, celebrations, business meetings and a city brimming with things to see and things to do make Johannesburg a preferred destination this January and February.
Sidewalk sales are one of the best ways to spruce up or add some flair to your wardrobe in the wake of limited finances thanks to the wild festive season splurges and unending shopping sprees.
Major shopping malls such as Eastgate, Killarney, Cresta and Sandton City are hosting sidewalk sales that offer unbelievable bargains and a wide range of amazing fashion options for January shoppers.
It is, believe it or not, possible to shop until you drop in the aftermath of the chaotic December holidays.
Jozi’s gorgeous weather and late sunset hours are definitely ideal for fine dining at the city’s plethora of eateries and cocktail establishments.
This is also an ideal time of the year to explore the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia and surrounding open spaces to enjoy a day of fresh air with family and friends.
The City has 22 278ha of open spaces and green areas consisting of more than 2 343 parks, 22 nature reserves and 151 bird sanctuaries, providing endless relaxation and leisure opportunities.
Golf enthusiasts will be thrilled to know the Joburg Open returns in February at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club’s east and west courses. From 7-10 February, the Joburg Open, an open qualifier for the British Open, will see a 210-man field battle it out for bragging rights on the greens.
The Joburg Open has helped to develop international careers of several of its winners and is the third stop before the 144th British Open at St Andrews with three places in the open on offer in South Africa.
February also sees Joburg playing host to the 10th annual Meetings Africa at the Sandton Convention Centre. Meetings Africa, which this year will be held from 23-25 February, is the continent’s flagship business exhibition that attracts a host of exhibitors, delegates and members of the media from across the globe.
Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development Councillor Ruby Mathang has described Meetings Africa as a platform to reinforce Johannesburg’s credentials as a vibrant and culturally diverse all-year round destination for business events, lifestyle and leisure, the arts, crafts, heritage, music, fashion, retail, sports and mega events.
For some cultural fun and entertainment, don’t miss the Chinese New Year celebrations on 21 February at the Sheds@1 Fox Street for an unforgettable visual feast.
Held annually, the Chinese New Year celebrations see musical fireworks and street celebrations bring together more than 3 000 people from various cultures in celebration.
The event will take place from 6pm to 9pm.
