Rollout of 240-Litre bins in Midrand and Protea Glen

Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management company, has started rolling out the 240-litre refuse bins in several suburbs and townships across the city in a fresh move to improve and enhance refuse collection.
On Saturday February 1, city officials will be moving from door to door handing out the new 240-litre bins to no fewer than 11 000 households in Allendale, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein in Midrand, Region A, according to Christa Venter, Pikitup’s General Manager: Business Process Re-engineering. Residents of Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Commercial and Klipfontein will receive theirs in the second phase. The 240-litre bins replace the 85-litre and plastic bags, which are being phased out from the Midrand areas. Venter says in some areas, plastic bags had become a health hazard as dogs tore them. This also caused problems for Pikitup crew members.
In Protea Glen Extension 27, Soweto, the rollout of the 240-Litre bins is already under way. Debbie du Preez, Pikitup’s Zondi Depot Regional Manager in Region D, says more than 6 000 bins will be distributed in the next few weeks to Protea Glen Extensions 20, 21, 24, 26 and some in Extension 28.
Last weekend more than 400 bins were handed out to households in Protea Glen extension 27. “We are giving the residents the 240-litre bins because there are, in many instances, a lot of backyard dwellers on their properties. We’re also giving the residents a bag every week for recycling. “The rollout continues this weekend and we expect another 400 households to receive bins. All new areas will be receiving the 240-litre bins,” says Du Preez.
Venter appealed to residents to take good care of the new bins. “No hot ash or builders’ rubble such as bricks are allowed in the 240-litre bins. The city still encourages the separation of refuse at source to promote recycling and emphasises that the new bins will not get in the way of the separation at source initiatives. Residents whose areas are not yet participating in the Separation at source programme must take their recyclable waste to the garden sites until we roll out Jozi@Work, a programme that will include separation at source elements,” Venter says.
