Steve Kekana to turn Joburg Theatre into a lovers’ paradise

Legendary crossover artist Steve Kekana, who serenaded lovers with his soulful and beautiful ballads in the late 1970s and 1980s, will make a rare appearance at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein later this month.

 

Kekana will give two live performances – one on Saturday April 29 and the other on Sunday April 30 – on The Mandela stage.

The two-show extravaganza, dubbed Iphupho, the Dream, will be hosted by Ikusasa Arts Development Project.

Kekana will take music lovers on a nostalgic journey starting in 1978 through songs he delivered solo or in collaboration with popular artists of the time such as Joe Nina, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, PJ Powers, Soul Brothers, the late Nana Coyote of Stimela fame and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Some of the big hitmakers he collaborated with – including Nina, Mabuse, Black Mambazo and Faith – will be on hand to take the audience down memory lane with Kekana in a two-hour-long offering on each of the two nights.

His hit single Iphupho with Nina and the all-time classic Burn Out with Mabuse are expected to sweep the audiences off their feet. The concert aims to entertain and inspire people living with disabilities and facing a myriad of other challenges, hence the title Iphupho, the Dream.

With 20 albums to his credit, Kekana is one of a handful of highly successful South African crossover musicians with hits in mbaqanga, pop, gospel and soul genres. The award-winning Kekana is also a lawyer who has written extensively on intellectual property.

The concert will be produced by telenovela Uzalo actor Simphiwe Majozi, who is also a director of Ikusasa Arts Development Project, which focuses on uncovering talent and celebrating arts legends and icons such as Kekana.
