Thousands up for grabs in Kota Challenge

27 August 2015

The City of Johannesburg’s Healthy Kota Challenge, run under the Go Jozi Healthy Lifestyle Flagship Programme, is back on track, with the quarterfinals scheduled to take place from Monday August 24 to Tuesday September 1.

Thirty food traders will over the next few days start battling it out for the ultimate bragging rights of being the best healthy kota (bunny chow) makers in town. The quarterfinals will be followed by semifinals, and then the final, on dates still to be determined. The overall winner will walk away with a R20 000 voucher, gold medal and branded chef’s uniform.

The first runner-up will win a R10 000 voucher, whereas the second runner-up will be rewarded with a R5 000 voucher. Four other participants will each receive R2 000 vouchers for their efforts. The competition started earlier this year with more than 150 informal traders – who sell kotas at schools, spaza shops and on the streets – taking part in the initial elimination rounds. The Healthy Kota Challenge is part of Executive Mayor Clr Parks Tau’s efforts to promote healthy eating and fight chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and heart ailments and to increase the city’s life expectancy.

The aim of the challenge is to:

  • Improve the nutritional value of the kota;

  • Curb the increase of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity;

  • Raise awareness and promote healthy eating habits;

  • Engage kota traders to influence positive change; and

  • Position Johannesburg as a caring city.

Dates and venues for the quarterfinals are as follows:

  • Monday August 24: Roodepoort City Hall in Region C;

  • Tuesday August 25: Ivory Park North Hall in Region A;

  • Wednesday August 26: Danie van Zyl Hall in Region B;

  • Thursday August 27: Yeoville Recreation Centre, Region F;

  • Friday August 28: San Kopano Community Hall in Alexandra in Region E;

  • Monday August 31; Pimville Hall in Region D; and

  • Tuesday September 1: Orange Farm Skills Centre in Region G.

All the quarterfinals will take place between 10am and 2pm.

Of the 30, 21 will advance to the semifinals, in which they stand a chance to win gas cylinders, gas stoves and wall clocks. This number will be whittled down to seven for the finals. A master chef will preside over the finals.
