‘Wayward’ JMPD officers probed
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is treating recent reports of bribery and corruption allegedly involving its officers with the seriousness and urgency they deserve to ensure that such illegal practices are completely rooted out of the system.
JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar says footage received by the JMPD from members of the public has been referred to the department’s Internal Affairs Unit.
“Our Internal Affairs Unit has the footage and is investigating. The JMPD does not tolerate corruption,” he says.
Chief Superintendent Minnaar says members of the public should understand the Criminal Procedure Act.
“According to the Act, both the corruptor and the corruptee are guilty of corruption and both can be criminally charged,” he warns.
Three alleged JMPD officers were recently captured on CCTV and cellphone camera soliciting or accepting bribes in two separate incidents.
Chief Superintendent Minnaar says the department’s zero tolerance anti-corruption stance is aimed at stamping out all forms of corruption.
He also appeals to the public to report such incidents.
“Should a corrupt officer ask for a bribe or extort money, members of the public are urged to immediately report them to the department via the 24-hour anti-corruption hotline 0800 203 712,” he advises.
