The City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, visited Region C on Tuesday November 22 to share her portfolio’s vision and engage residents on a number of issues, including the use of public facilities.
The visits to Cosmo City and Braamfischerville were part of a series of imbizos the department has embarked on to bring residents up to speed with the role of her department and to listen to their views on service delivery-related matters.
The newly reconfigured Community Development portfolio includes the Library and Information Services, Massive Open Online Varsity (MOOV) programme, Sports and Recreation Directorate, Arts and Culture Directorate, Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo and the Johannesburg Theatres Company.
Addressing residents at the Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre, Cllr Sifumba said it was crucial for residents to understand what her portfolio entailed, adding that all the department’s programmes and functions were there for their benefit.
She said the Department of Community Development was working hard to ensure that the programmes provided at the various centres were attractive to young people so they could also participate. Cllr Sifumba said being a responsive government meant engaging all stakeholders on how the City could better the lives of residents.
“We want to ensure that service delivery is satisfactory,” she said. “We’re here to serve you because without you there is no us. When you voted three months ago, you gave us the opportunity to develop communities and residents,” said Sifumba.
She said Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba was passionate about improving the lives of residents, adding that he came up with the 10-point plan precisely to help create opportunities for everyone.
She pleaded with residents to blow the whistle against drug dealers, saying the City could not win the fight substance abuse on its own. “Our mayor launched an anti-drugs unit to intensify the fight against substance abuse. So, let’s join the fight and make this a success,” said Cllr Sifumba.
