World-acclaimed Geneva Ballet hits Joburg Theatre

12 June 2015

The internationally acclaimed Geneva Ballet will make its Johannesburg Theatre debut on Wednesday June 17.

Under director Philippe Cohen, this much-awaited appearance – on the Mandela Stage – will mark the iconic Roméo and Juliette’s 100th performance. Only six shows are scheduled – until Sunday June 21.

Established in Switzerland in the 19th century, the company is known for its rich repertoire of neo-classical and contemporary dance styles showcasing highly skilled dancers and top choreographers. It is considered one of the most original dance companies in Europe, excelling in variations of the classical ballet vernacular through inventive artistic collaborations.

The Geneva Ballet Company features young dancers – their average age is 25 – from various countries. Among them is South Africa’s Angela Rebelo, niece of well-known local actors Nicky Rebelo and Jennifer Steyn-Rebelo. During its two-week tour of Johannesburg, the company will also be involved in a collaborative project with South African choreographers and dancers.

This unique project will involve four local choreographers – Gregory Maqoma, Mamela Nyamza, PJ Sabbagha and Fana Tshabalala – as well as Nathanaël Marie of the Geneva Ballet Company. It will take place at the Soweto Theatre, Dance Space in Newtown, University of Johannesburg and Hillbrow Theatre. The creative result of this collaboration will be showcased in partnership with the Soweto and Wits theatres on Saturday June 13 and Sunday June 14 respectively.

The Geneva Ballet’s Johannesburg tour is supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, Swiss embassy and Swiss Chamber of Commerce in South Africa.
